Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D. (1952) is one of the great achievements of Italian neorealism—a deeply humane portrait of an elderly man struggling to maintain his dignity in postwar Rome.

Umberto Domenico Ferrari is a retired civil servant whose modest pension is no longer enough to cover his basic expenses. Facing eviction from his rented room and increasingly isolated from the society around him, Umberto finds companionship and unconditional loyalty in his small dog, Flike. What begins as the story of one man’s financial hardship gradually becomes a moving exploration of loneliness, pride, friendship, and the fundamental human need to be seen and valued.

De Sica tells Umberto’s story with remarkable restraint, finding enormous emotional power in ordinary moments rather than melodrama. Both heartbreaking and compassionate, Umberto D. remains a timeless examination of aging, economic insecurity, and human dignity.
